The paper examines Carr’s reading of Hegel, identifying in particular the latter’s significance to Carr’s dialectical reading of Realism and Utopianism. The paper also critically assesses the extent to which Carr’s reading of Hegel is in need of thorough and systematic revision. The primary aim of the paper is to put Carr in conversation with Hegel anew, identifying those parts of Carr’s ethical project that would benefit from deeper and broader engagement with Hegel’s complex political and ethical positions. An additional aim of the paper is to put Carr’s reading of Hegel in dialogue with interpretations of Hegel’s ethics and politics by contemporary political theorists and philosophers. Finally, the paper hopes to point toward new avenues of inquiry for the development of Realist ethics in International Relations by reference to the work of these two extraordinary thinkers.

Seán Molloy studied History at Trinity College, Dublin before undertaking his MA in International Relations at Dublin City University and his PhD at the University of Limerick. Molloy has worked at the universities of Sussex, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Kent. His last book Kant’s International Relations: The Political Theology of Perpetual Peace (Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press, 2017) won both the Susan Strange Best Book Prize and the Sussex International Theory Prize. From December 2019-2020- he will be a British Academy Mid-Career Fellow.
