Feminism at the forefront of Europe

Human Rights
20200206-feminism-carrusel-eng
Date: Thursday, 06 February 2020 12:00 - 13:45

Venue: Espai Catalunya Europa (Rue de la Loi / Wetstraat, 227 - 1040 Brussels)

Feminism, as a social and political movement, but also as the school of thought for the emancipation of women, is transforming societies worldwide. Be it from the fight against the patriarchy or by proposing new social, economic and social models, feminism today is a plural and crosscutting discourse that opens and broadens the democratic debate and questions the very foundations of the social and political structure.

Feminist thought and discourse has risen dramatically in terms of visibility over the last years and its voices have become global and very diverse. Many people see the “Me too” movement and the feminist strikes of March 8, 2018 and 2019 in Spain as the wake of feminism’s fourth wave, a worldwide-reaching movement that captured the attention and set the global agenda.

IDEES, the Center for Contemporary Affairs’ magazine, has devoted its issue #47 to Feminism(s), as the forefront of the democratic fight for new rights. Within the ambitious endeavor to grasp the spirit of this new breed of feminism, the Center is teaming up with the Delegation of the Government of Catalonia to the EU to explore the impact it is having at the core of the EU and Europe.

Is feminism setting the EU agenda? How could the EU promote a feminist discourse globally? What measures should take the EU towards equal representation? Our distinguished group of panelists will address these very relevant questions and engage in a timely debate, shortly after the first female president of the Commission takes office.
